German Reading Room

German Reading Ro om was founded as a result of cooperation between Azerbaijan Un iversity of Languages and Goethe Institute-Internationales. The Reading Room is open to any individual who is interested in German language and culture.

German books, magazines (journals) and newspapers, as well as music and audio and video tapes in German are at full disposal of the audience. There exist 3659 literary sources including such fields as philosophy, religion, economy, politics, education, psychology, child and young people's literature, medicine, art, fiction, history, law, geography and language. Furthermore, 432 video and 355 audio cassettes, 17 newspapers and magazines embracing various fields and a TV set with a satellite are also available to the readers. A computer in the Reading Room is intended for the library workers.


American Studies Center

The American Studies Center was established following the opening of the American Studies concentration in the Regional Studies program in 2003. In the Academic year of 2004-2005 the Center was headed by Prof. Richard Kortum, a Fulbright Scholar, who also worked together with the specialists from AUL to develop the American Studies undergraduate program. The Center is equipped with computers, an Internet access, a Satellite TV, as well as modern books, periodicals, and other resources on American politics, economics, history and culture. The American Studies Center is in close cooperation with the libraries of the US Embassy and other international resource centers.

Middle East and Israeli Studies Center

The Center was opened as a follow-up to the Israeli and Middle East undergraduate Program, which was established in the year 2005-2006. The Center was set up with the grant provided by the Jewish House in Azerbaijan . The Center is equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities, such as computers, satellite TV, audio and video-tape recorders, Internet. About 2,000 books have been donated to the Center by the Jewish community in the US . Resources cover the issues such us Jewish history, History of Middle East, Culture of Middle East, Israeli Art and Literature, Holocaust, Religious Issues in Middle East, History of Civilizations in Middle East etc.The Center is used for study and research purposes by the University students and outside visitors.


Italian Cultural Center

The Italian Cultural Center was established as a joint effort between Azerbaijan University of Languages and Italian Embassy in Azerbaijan . The Center provides for all kinds of possibilities for gaining a rich exposure to the Italian language and culture through various books about the history, geography, politics and economy of Italy , Italian literature, as well as audio and video materials in the Italian language.


The Korean Language Center


The Korean Language Center is well equipped with books and language tea ching aids. The Center offers con versation classes and language lessons for AUL students (in addition to their program hours) as well as other people who wish to learn Korean. Five Korean professors are involved in the teaching process.


The Austrian Center for Economic and Cultural Issues

The AustrianHeydemCenter for Economic and Cultural Issues was established as a joint initiative between Ms. Maria Gurer, former Ambassador of Austria to Azerbaijan , and Prof. Samad Seyidov, Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages. The Center is sponsored by the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy in Moscow , Russia . The Center is equipped with books, booklets, journals, newspapers, which provide broad information about Austria , its political, economic and cultural life. The Center also organizes various events, lectures, seminars etc. with the participation of Austrian political, academic and art people. Not only the students of the University but also a broader community can take the advantage of using this resource center.


The Center of Scandinavian Studies

The Center of Scandinavian Studies was established by Azerbaijan University of Languages in cooperation with the Center for Norwegian Studies Abroad (CNSA) at Agder University College (AUC). The Center of Scandinavian studies is equipped with relevant facilities to supply information about the cultural, political and economical situation in the Scandinavian countries, taking Norway as a point of departure. Although affiliated with Azerbaijan University of Languages, the Center is dedicated to develop considerable expertise in the practical and academic sides of Scandinavian Studies in Azerbaijan as a whole.


Centre for Research on Education

The Centre for Research on Education, is a university unit responsible to provide expertise on quality of higher education. In our work we use the methodology of social sciences combined with analysis of higher education policy both in Azerbaijan and abroad. Therefore, the activities of the Centre are organized in form of periodic surveys (such as annual classroom assessment) as well as approach the general development in the area of higher education.

Following surveys are being carried out or planned for imminent future by the Centre:
" General Education Assessment
Curricula evaluation and program review
" International students assessment
" Expectation and plans of University students: cross-department survey.

We also assist the Human Resources Department by developing tools such as questionnaires and analysis for assessing the quality of work and expectations of University staff.


UNESCO Chair in Translation and Intercultural Studies
The UNESCO Chair in Translation and Intercultural Studies was officially opened at Azerbaijan University of Languages on May 5, 2000. This event was a follow-up of the 1st international conference on Future Aspects of Translation, Interpretation and Terminology in Azerbaijan in the New Global Context. The conference was held under the auspices of UNESCO on May 3-7, 1999 (Baku, Azerbaijan).

The activities of the UNESCO Chair include:
• Training and retraining sessions for professors and/or students in the area of oral and written translation and interpretation;
• Acquisition of books and journals, dictionaries and other kinds of literature relating to the theory and practice of translation as well as computing hardware and software;
• Networking and contacts with national and international organizations;
• Gathering statistics and data on translation (e.g. inventory of foreign works published in Azerbaijan);
• Organization of public symposia and conferences on the contemporary problems of translation and interpretation activities.



French Information Centre named George Sand

History of Establishment
Information Centre named George Sand was established in 1997 by joint cooperation of the Embassy of the Republic of France in Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan University of Languages. Main aim of the establishment of Information Centre named George Sand is creation an opportunity for students, teachers and francophone users to use encyclopedic collections, dictionaries, audio and video cassettes, books and internet services in French.
