Course Registration

An undergraduate student is not permitted to select courses more than one level above the student's own classification . There are occasions, however, on which exceptions to this regulation may be deemed desirable and necessary by the student's adviser and/or dean. Undergraduate students may be registered for graduate level courses with the written permission of the chairperson of the department or the dean of the school in which the course is offered. In any case, student enrolling in any course should meet the prerequisites.

Course schedule is announced one week before the semester begins. Each instructor presents his or her course at the beginning of the semester. Presentations are held by instructors during the first week of the semester. Students may attend the presentations during one week in order to make a proper decision before registration. Registration for a course should come to an end upon the completion of the first week from the beginning of the semester.

Registration is administered by the Registration Department of the Dean's Office.

Course re-taking

If the student wishes to postpone any required subject, or fails to complete it successfully, he has to retake that subject in the following year, or in the following semester depending on when the course is offered again.

Extra subjects are allowed only if the previous requirements for course taking are fulfilled. The registration for courses has to start from the courses failed or postponed during the previous year(s).

Thus, the students can register for a minimum of 12 and maximum of 19 credits per semester, and the degree may be earned for a period shorter or longer than 4 years.

Attendance Policy

Azerbaijan University of Languages maintains a strict attendance policy. Attendance makes part of the assessment, which counts towards the final grade. Attendance and class participation make 10% of the final grade at the discretion of the instructor. Moreover, a student who has missed more than 30% of the classroom hours is not considered eligible to take the final exam.

Examinations

Final examinations in all courses are held at the end of each term. There is no departure from the printed schedule of examinations. An absence without an excuse will result in failure. In case of an absence with a serious excuse, or an official University excuse, the exam can be re-taken only with the permission of the dean and the approval of the instructor. Absence from intermediate tests, seminars, and quizzes with an excuse acceptable to the instructor or the dean should be made up by a makeup test or an excuse from taking the test at the discretion of the instructor.

Only graduating students who are in their last term are allowed to re-take an exam (provided that there is only one re-examination per course) to remove a failure.

Credit by examination

Students manifesting sufficient knowledge and skills in Information Technologies can be exempted from taking this course and can earn their credits by taking only the final examination without attendance during the semester. Placement tests are conducted in Information Technologies for the purpose of determining the student's knowledge level. The student manifesting the advanced level of knowledge and skills can be exempted from attendance at his own discretion.
