The School of the English Language offers a BA degree in TOEFL. It exists in an urban, multicultural setting and has a three-part mission. The first is to prepare professionals who have the abilities and dispositions to facilitate and enhance learning and development within diverse settings. The second is the discovery and dissemination of knowledge related to learning, teaching, and development. The third is the development of professional partnerships to promote meaningful educational, social, economic and cultural change. The School mission supports:
The School of the English Lan guage offers prog rams at the undergraduate le vel, engages in research and prog ram develop ment activities, and provides field services to the educational community. The conceptual framework guiding education curricula and programs in the School is grounded in four core concepts that are central to the vision faculty have of professional educators graduating from the School's programs: intercultural, interconnectedness, inquiry, and instructional leadership.
The undergraduate specialization in education is designed to allow students to learn more about the multitude of professional an research issues in the field o education and to understand the complex interactions between social, political, and economic forces which influence and shape educational policies in the Republic of Azerbaijan. It is also designed to provide an introductory educational sequence for students who wish to pursue careers in education either as teachers or researchers, and present an information base in the area of education by which Azerbaijan State University of Languages' students can become better consumers of educational services as future parents and citizens. An interest to English draws many students to the School, which also offers courses in other fields, including the history and structure of the English language itself. Although committed to no single method or approach, the School encourages an emphasis on literary history and requires of its undergraduate majors a first hand acquaintance with such influential writers as Chaucer, Milton, and Shakespeare. Students may range outward from this core to rich variety of other fields. An understanding and appreciation of a foreign language can furnish lifelong rewards. In addition to such personal benefits, the School seeks to impart the capacity to make balanced critical judgments and the ability to speak and write the English language persuasively, with point and effect. Such skills are essential to success in a variety of professions for which English can provide excellent preparation, including law, administration, business, and teaching.
The School also offers a program designed for students who wish to develop research skills related to the teaching and learning English as a foreign language. The lower-level courses are offered to improve teachers' performance in the EFL classroom. The upper-level courses provide opportunity to investigate in depth some particular aspect of teaching and learning English as a foreign language. The course of study includes a practical element: observing classes, preparing lesson plans, and actual classroom teaching. There is, however, greater emphasis on theory in the program. Students are expected to become familiar with current theories regarding the nature of language, as well as the ways in which people acquire and use language. They are also expected to be able to relate theoretical guidelines to practical procedures.
