The School of the German Language is one of the oldest schools at the University. It offers a BA in Teaching German as a Foreign Language. The School has more than 204 students.

The curriculum is designed to provide the students with strong language skills, modern methods of teaching foreign languages as well as a number of interesting courses in humanities and social sciences (history, philosophy, psychology, political science, logic etc.), which contribute to the formation of the students' broad outlook and good analytical capabilities.

The School stro ngly enco urages its stu dents to spend some time of their studies in German-spea king countri es. The re are a lot of extracu rricular ac tivi ties orga nized by the School, such as presentations by guest-speakers, German language nights, drama performances with the participation of the teachers and students, festivals, round-table discussions etc., where students have an opportunity to practice their language skills through informal conversations.

Via its extensive connections with the Universities and schools of Germany and Austria , the Schools offers its students as well as professors and teachers various exchange and study abroad programs. Due to its long-term relationship with the University of Bochum , a considerable number of teachers and students visited Germany and were trained for various disciplines or topics. At present, such partnership is in force with the University of Calw . Specialists, including well-known professors, are regularly invited from this University to deliver lectures or conduct courses in German literature, language and linguistics.

The Department of the German Language, which functions under the auspices of the School of the German Language, is very productive in preparing textbooks for secondary schools and Universities, as well as German-Azerbaijani and Azerbaijani-German Dictionaries.
