/ School of Philology

The School of Philology is a unique school concentrating on the language and literature study. It offers a BA in philology in four concentrations:
a) Azerbaijani philology b) English philology c) French philology d) German philology

Most of the courses are taught in the target language. The development of writing skills takes a considerably important place in the curriculum. Students are taught to generate complicated texts using various styles - from technical to literary. Besides purely theoretical linguistic and literature studies, the programs have a strong emphasis on cross-cultural communication. Studying literature, language and the culture of the related countries equips students with necessary knowledge and attitude about other cultures.
The School offers a new approach to philological studies. The programs ail to achieve excellence in teaching and research. Language training is an essential training of the program. However, besides the practical approach, the programs strive to provide a broad knowledge about linguistics and language theory; thus every aspect of language - phonetics, grammar, lexicology, stylistics - is given an important place in the curricula. Students are encouraged to engage in research from early years. This enables students to use intellectual potential to the maximum.
The concentration in Azerbaijani Philology places a strong emphasis on the development of written and oral Azerbaijani language and communication proficiency, a profound study of Azerbaijani literature and a wide range of selection of interdisciplinary courses in Azerbaijani society, culture and philosophy. Some specific courses such as Communication Skills, Functional Styles of Azerbaijani, Academic Writing aim to develop some specific skills that are essential for finding a job in case the graduates wish to get employment before they make their desired academic career in philology.
