Doctoral Studies is the highest level of education in the Republic of Azerbaijan and a training form of high-quality scientific-pedagogical specialists, which carries out the process of getting a doctoral degree. The Office of Doctoral Studies is a structural unit of Azerbaijan University of Languages, and its activities are part of the service of the Vice-rector for Science.
Training of scientific-pedagogical specialists at Azerbaijan University of Languages started in 1949. That year an office of post-graduate studies was created at the then Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. During that period the post-graduate courses of the University trained outstanding scholars, among them are I.Rahimov, O.Musayev, Z.Aghayev, G.Guliyev, Z.Verdiyeva, D.Yunusov, F.Veysalli, Sh.Khallilli, B.Huseynov, A.Abdullayev, B.Ismayilov.
It should be pointed out that the Office of Post-graduate Education, which was launched in 1949, has bens continuing its activities as the Office of Doctoral Studies. The Office carries out its activities in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Education (2009), the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Science (2016), “The Rules of Formation of Doctoral Programs and Admission to Doctoral Programs” approved by Decision #129 (1 July 2010) of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the University Statutes and Annual Plan of Actions. The main duty of the Office of Doctoral Studies is to coordinate the work with the staff members, doctoral students and post-graduate students of all the departments at the University, and guide the training of doctoral and post-graduate students in the frames of the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Sciences Programs. As a structural unit of the AUL, the Office of Doctoral Studies is closely cooperating with the other higher educational institutions of the country, the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, education centres and institutions, the offices of doctoral studies of the local and foreign universities.
The training of scientific-pedagogical specialists at the Office of Doctoral Studies is carried out in the frames of the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Sciences Programs. In the Doctor of Philosophy Program the duration of the full-time education is 3 years, the part-time education is 4 years, and post graduate courses last 4 years. In the Doctor of Sciences Program the full-time education is 4 years, the part-time education is 5 years, the training as a post graduate student is considered 5 years.
The admission to doctoral studies and registration at post-graduation courses are carried out in accordance with the requirements of “The Rules of the Formation of Doctoral Programs and Admission to Doctoral Programs” approved by Decision #129 (1 July 2010) of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the periods as defined by the Cabinet of Ministers and Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
At present the Office of Doctoral Studies provides the training of scientific-pedagogical specialists in accordance with the classification of doctoral specializations as approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the following areas of specialization: Language Theory – 570401; The Azerbaijani Language – 570601; The Germanic Languages – 5708.01; The Romance Languages – 5709.01; Comparative–historical and Comparative-typological Linguistics – 5714.01 ; Azerbaijani Literature – 5716.01; World Literature – 5718.01; The Theory and Methodology of Training and Education – 5801.01; General Pedagogics, History of Pedagogics and Education – 5804.01; Social Psychology – 6114.01, and envisages the further increase of the areas of specialist training.
